Answer: The largest pizza on record was constructed at the Norwood Pick 'n Pay Hypermarket in Johannesburg, South Africa on December 8, 1990. The Guinness Book of Records measures the pizza at over 122 feet in diameter!

I think the more interesting question, in terms of your novel, is why someone would do this. Why the obsession with oversized food? Would there be rivalries and jealousies . . . or flawless teamwork?

As far as I can tell, the Norwood pizza was created to celebrate the launch of Pick and Pay’s “Theatre of Foods.” I surmise this because the Pick and Pay says, “The opening of the food hall operation in 1990 paved the way for this notion when it was launched at the Norwood Hypermarket.” But there has to be more to the story!

Guinness ranks the largest pizza as the 7th largest food in the world—behind, among other things, an ice cream sundae that weighed in at 24.9 tons! Think of all the fun you could have with that in your book. I mean, how would the characters eat it before it all melted?

Note: I did however, find an unsubstantiated report of an even larger pizza created by the son of the manager of the Pizza Ranch Restaurant in Iowa Falls in 2005.

Thanks for playing Stump the Librarian! May this be the best year yet!
