Can raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries grow together?

Answer: If you mean in the same field or at the same farm, the answer is yes. There are a number of commercial berry farms, such at the one called Barbie’s Berries, which has a nice aerial photo of what such an arrangement looks like.

The trick, though, would be having ripe fruit from all three types of berries at the same time. In the geographic location where the above mentioned farm is located,
“Strawberry harvest starts in early to mid-June, and runs through mid-July.
Raspberry harvest starts late-June, and runs through late-July.
Blueberry harvest starts mid-July and runs through mid-August”

Which means, the only time you can get all three would be the few overlapping days of “mid-July.”

In the wild, though you could find all three berry types in the same geographic location, it would be quite odd to see all three of these plants growing “together” in one mass. Part of this is because the berries come from very different plants. According to It’s Berry Season, strawberries grow from rhizomes, or runners that trail along the ground, while blueberries grow on bushes, and blackberries on canes, which are harder stalks that grow vertically.

It would be kind of fun in your novel to include an elderly character who used to be a serious berry picker. The “Fruits of Nature” article quotes one picker: “We get great tips listening to the old-timers. Some can no longer pick, but are eager to share their berry stories. Our dear neighbors John and Veronica, both in their nineties, have directed us to many berry patches. We, in turn, share berries with them and delight in seeing the sparkle in Veronica's eyes as she smiles and says, ‘Oh, goodie,’ then clutches a container of berries close to her as if it were gold.”

Oh, for the sweet berries of summer . . . the only bad thing about NaNoWriMo being in November.

Thanks for playing Stump the Librarian!
