Your word-count goal for NaNoWriMo’s Young Writers Program can be completely unique. You should take into account your writing experience, your schedule (how much time you’ll realistically be able to spend writing), and your enthusiasm for the event. We know everybody can write a novel in a month, but you might choose to write a shorter one—or totally go for it, with a recommended goal above your grade level.
Below, you’ll find three options for each grade level. You might choose a low, middle, or high goal from these numbers, or select another word count in the same range. It’s all up to you!
Educators: You can also use these numbers to recommend word-count goals for students. We believe that these targets should be individualized to better differentiate instruction during November.
