Camp Care Package #1: Develop a complete character.

Author Claire Kann is your Camp Counselor this week. Find all Camp Care Packages in Breaking News throughout the month of July.

Even if a character comes to you fully formed, it’s your job to sit down and learn their history, to know them inside and out. I like to think characters are similar to trees—inside of them are growth rings representing years of life and development. As a writer, it’s your job to account for all of those rings.

Today's Writing Dare

Draw four circles, starting with a BIG one on the outside and ending with a small one in the middle. Each one represents a different side to your main character. Spend 3-5 minutes writing or jotting down details on each circle (so 12-20 minutes total) about how your character acts/ how they appear to....

  • Circle 1 (the BIG outside one): ...total strangers.
  • Circle 2 (the next inner one): ...people at school or work.
  • Circle 3 (the second smallest): ...friends.
  • Circle 4 (the innermost one): ...family (or super-super-close friends).
